2002 Internal Grants Program

Call for Proposals
(Application Form)

Purpose and Scope

The University of Kansas Digital Library Initiatives (DLI) invites project proposals to convert scholarly materials to digital format. The 2002 DLI Internal Grants Program will provide funding and limited technical support to members of the KU community for creating networked digital collections. We are seeking projects that will increase the amount and scope of scholarly information available online, help build digital collections of obvious and long-term utility to the KU community, and encourage their use in teaching, learning, and research.

To be eligible, projects must make available to the KU community digital resources not previously available in a networked digital format, and must involve resources that are held uniquely at KU, or have been created at or by KU faculty or staff. In addition, projects must integrate these new resources into the general infrastructure being built by the DLI and with related materials provided by other units at KU.

Who is Eligible to Apply

The competition is open to any faculty member or academic researcher who holds a full-time appointment at the University of Kansas, Lawrence or Edwards campuses.

Deadlines
Preliminary proposals due by: October 11, 2002
Preliminary proposals selected, project managers notified by: November 15, 2002
Full proposals due by: December 20, 2002

Project Selection Criteria

While various types of projects will be funded by the DLI, we seek a balance of projects across disciplines and media types, and welcome collaboration on projects that combine internal and external funding. We particularly encourage projects that convert or create networked digital resources that:

  • provide traditional resources in new ways, or represent new and innovative types of resources;
  • are likely to generate new types of use or significantly increase use of existing resources;
  • are collaborative across collections, where the digital materials can be integrated in ways that traditional dispersed collections cannot;
  • have a high likelihood of use within the academic community and show evidence of user input in project conception;
  • show a likelihood of success based on the project's concept and effective workplan;
  • fit within the DLI infrastructure and standards;
  • will be completed by the end of FY2003.
Financial Considerations

It is anticipated that individual project awards will be in the amount of $15,000 or less. The DLI welcomes collaboration on projects that combine internal and external funding.

Project Assistance

As appropriate, the DLI will assist with the creation of digital files and descriptive metadata tags to make materials accessible, provide software to enable searching of the files, and maintain the resulting files.

Application and Selection Process, and Timeline
The proposal submission process will be in two stages
  • Preliminary Proposals - short proposals, describing the project in general terms, to be used for initial project selection. Application forms for preliminary proposals can be found here. (MS Word version for download)
  • Full Proposals - more detailed proposals, requested for selected projects. Full proposals will be developed in consultation with DLI staff.

Proposals must be received by 5:00 p.m, October 11, 2002

The Evaluation Committee will review preliminary proposals by November 15, 2002, and invite selected projects to develop full proposals for final review. The Evaluation Committee intends to make allocations of funds upon approval of final proposals with earliest budget start dates of December 23, 2002. Later start dates are possible, however all projects must be completed by the end of FY2003.

Reporting

Awardees will be expected to provide quarterly status updates during the term of their projects and a final report after project completion. In addition, awardees will be expected to share the results of their project through a presentation to the campus Digital Library Advisory Group. DLI reserves the right to publish scholarly works describing the projects or include examples of the projects in its informational documentation.
